Ești alb?

Știi ce înseamnă să ai apă din perete?

Îți place părul tău?

Ai mers la școală?

Am 7 frați și două surori. Eu sunt a patra. Printre cei mai mari. Îmi plac copiii. Știu să mă comport cu ei. Am răbdare cu ei. Îmi place să mă joc cu ei. Să mă prostesc, să râd, să-i fac să râdă de mine, să se joace în parul meu și să îmi facă ce vor ei să îmi facă și apoi să facem poză cu coafura realizată.

De ceva timp am înțeles că de la educația copiilor pornește cu adevărat schimbarea. Tânărul de azi este copilul de ieri. Dacă copilul de ieri nu a primit atenție, iubire, înțelegere, acceptare, vorbe bune, tânărul de azi ajunge într-o lume în care se așteaptă de la el dezvoltare, creștere, înțelegere, acceptare, iubire, vorbe bune.

Baiul e că nu prea poți oferi ceea ce nu primești, pentru că nu știi cum arată.

Prin intermediul Episcopiei Ortodoxe din Cluj, o echipă de 7 tineri vom merge în ianuarie – februarie 2020 într-un sat din Uganda, Monde, dintre care 2 persoane, eu și sor-mea, am fost și anul acesta, în aprilie – mai. O parte din echipă este implicată doar în tabăra pentru copii, iar o parte dintre noi vom rămâne la mănăstirea unde vom fi cazați.

Mănăstirea de acolo este și orfelinat. Măicuțele de acolo au grijă de 60 fete și 10 băieți. Mai mult sau mai puțin. Numărul fluctuează. Ele le asigură tot – mâncare, loc de dormit, taxele școlare, transport, haine, ș.a.

În satul în care este mănăstirea, Monde, vom face o tabără de două săptămâni cu peste 250 de copii. În cadrul taberei vom face ateliere educative și creative, jocuri și cateheze. Pe toată această perioadă toate costurile vor fi acoperite de noi – 3 mese/zi/250+ copii, cazare, materiale ș.a.

Cei care vom rămâne și după tabără, vom mai rămâne cu copiii de la mănăstire pentru a continua cu activitățile. Pe toată perioada, noi suntem cei care suportăm toate costurile – mâncare, cazare, transport. Cât suntem noi acolo, ne dorim ca meniul copiilor să fie mai variat. De obicei, mânăncă fasole cu orez sau un fel de mămăligă cu fasole.

Am tot scris în articolele mele despre motivele pentru care vreau să mă reîntorc acolo. Te invit cu mare drag să le citești sau chiar să ne întâlnim să povestim despre ele. Cât am fost acolo, maicile ne-au spus: ”de 10 ani vin europenii la noi, dar ce faceți voi, nu a mai făcut nimeni. Niciodată fetele nu s-au atașat de cineva.”

Ce-am ”oferit” noi copiilor cu care am intrat în contact, nu doar celor de la mănăstire?

Atenție, iubire, înțelegere, conexiune și…..atingere. I-am atins. Pe ei, ”urâții”, ”negrii”, ”care n-au pielea atât de frumoasă ca a noastră”. Îi pupam pe frunte, pe mână, când cădeau și se loveau, îi lăsam să se joace în părul meu, le curățam rănile, dansam cu ei. Ne comportam cu ei cum ne comportăm cu copiii de aici. Nimic diferit. Doar am fost noi.

Diferența dintre România și Uganda este că în România, copiii sunt ceva de neprețuit, iar în Uganda, sunt doar niște produse. ”Normalul” nostru, orice o însemna normal, pentru ei este ”anormal”. Copiii trebuie să îngenuncheze în fața tuturor, trebuie să muncească, trebuie să asculte și să execute ce li se spune, trebuie să tacă, trebuie să se supună la toți și toate. Copilul n-are dreptul să deschidă gura.

Cu noi au vorbit copiii. Și le-am spus că în fața noastră nu trebuie să îngenuncheze. Și când se puneau ei în genunchi, ne puneam și noi în genunchi.

M-am uitat zilele trecute la The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Netflix) și am înțeles cât este de important ca o carte să ajungă în mâna unui copil. Pentru el a fost o carte. Pentru alți copii poate fi altceva. Și noi putem face asta.

Când spun ”noi” nu mă refer doar la oamenii din echipa care vom merge acolo, ci la noi toți.

”Noi” –  care merg acolo pe teren și dau din timpul și experiența lor

”Noi” – care susținem ca timpul și experiența unor oameni să ajungă acolo.

Una fără alta nu se poate.

We can change some children`s lives by 1%

Have you ever wondered about the colour of your skin?

Do you realise how great is to have ruuning water from the tap?

Do you like your hair?

Are you attending any kind of school?

I come from a family of 10 children, I have 7 brothers and 2 sisters. I am the fourth in the line. Among the eldest ones. I love childen. I know how to treat them kindly. I take patience in playing about, laughing, making them laugh at me, letting them mess around with my hair and then, taking a picture of  my new “hairstyle”.

For some time now I have become aware that the real changes depend on what type of education is delivered to the child. Today`s youngster is the former child. If the former child hasn`t been treated with care, affection, love, understanding, tolerance, good words, today`s youngster descends into a world that expects of him/her to display maturity, good manners, understanding, tolerance, love, good words.

The problem is that you can`t offer anything if you haven`t received anything, because you don`t know what it feels like.

Helped by the Orthodox Diocese in Cluj, a team of 7 youngsters will stay in the Monde village from Uganda, from the beginning of January until the end of February, the current year. Me and my sister have already been there during the months of April and May, 2019.  This time, we will do a one week camp and we will spend much more time with the girls and boys from the orphanage and then, we will go in different parishes in Uganda to make catechism sessions and to play with the kids and with the teachers.

The monastery functions also as an orphanage. The nuns there, take care of 60 girls and 10 boys. The number is ever changing. They make sure the children get anything they need-food, accommodation, school taxes, transportation, clothes and so on.

In the Monde village where the monastery is located, we will organise a one-week camp, hosting 250 children. During the camp`s workshops we will deliver educational, creative and catechism sessions. During the whole period all the costs will be covered by us -3 meals a day, accommodation, educational materials, etc,  for 250 children. 

After the camp, the part of the team involved in the camp will join the others to carry on the activities for the children at the monastery. For the whole period we will be the ones to cover all the costs-food, accommodation, transportation. During our stay there, we wish the children`s menu were as varied as possible. They usually eat beans with rice or a kind of polenta with beans.

During my recent articles I have kept on writing about the reasons why I wish to go back there. I kindly invite you to read them or even meet and talk about them. For our first time there, the nuns confessed to us like this: “Europeans have come here for 10 years now, but what miracles you are performing, no one has before. There hasn`t been any instance of the girls bonding with someone until you came.”

What have we “offered” to all the children we`ve met or to the ones at the monastery?

Care, love, understanding, communication and.. touch. We used to kiss them on their foreheads, on their hands, whenever they fell and pranged, we let them mess around with our hair, we cleaned their injuries, we danced with them. We treated them just as we treat the children here in our country. We didn`t do anything different. We were simply us.

The difference between Romania and Uganda lies in the fact that the children are priceless in our country, whereas in Uganda they are mere products. Our “normality”, no matter how you may define it, for them it is “unusual”. The children must kneel in front of everybody, work, obey and do whatever they are told to, comply everyone and everything. The child doesn`t have the right to speak out.

I have recently watched “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” ( on Netflix) and I figured out how important is that a book gets into the hands of a child. For him it is a book. For other children it can be anything else. We can do it also.

When I say “we” I don`t mean only the team members that will go there, but all of us.

”We” –  who will go there and give away our time and experience to them.

”We” – who make it possible that some people`s time and experience reach there.

You can`t have one without the other.

I am part of those ‘we” that go there and give away their time and experience.
